Guangzhou Sport University is located on the central axis of Guangzhou, the central city of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Founded in 1956, it is one of the earliest sports universities established in New China and the only independent sports institution in southern China with undergraduate and graduate ducation. It is a modern university that integrates multiple disciplines, mainly focusing on sports studies. At present, there are over 8000 students, including 1052 full-time gaduate students, GZSU mainly offers master's and bachelor's degress, and collaborates with other universities at home and abroad to offer doctoral degree education.
Rooted in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, GZSU aims to cultivate high-quality composite sports professionals. During its long-term educational practice, it has formed the school-running characteristic of "promoting Lingnan sports culture and cultivating sports talents in South China". It plays a unique role in the national and regional economic and social development, serves the strategic needs of building a Healthy China, a Sports Power, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and actively integrates into the Belt and Road Initiative. It has played an irreplaceable role in physical education, national fitness, sports training, youth sports, the sports industry, as well as the exchange and dissemination of Lingnan sports cul- ture, and exerts a strong influence on Hong Kong, Macao, and Southeast Asian regions.
At present, the university has 15 teaching institutions and 23 undergraduate majors, covering six major disciplines, namely education, economics, management, art, literature, and medicine. It has the authorization to confer master's degrees in the first-level discipline of Sports Science and the second-level discipline of Sports Medicine. Among the university's teaching staff, there are experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, winners of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, experts from national sports professional committees, national excellent teachers, specially-appointed professors of the Pearl River Scholar Program, provincial-level famous model teachers, as well as international and national sports umpires and referees.
The university currently has 2 national first-class undergraduate major construction sites, 3 national characteristic major construction sites, and 8 provincial first-class undergraduate major construction sites. It also has 3 national first-class courses and 17 provinciall first-class courses (including 2 provincial curriculum ideology and politics demonstration courses). At present, the university has 8 provincial teaching teams, 2 provincial curriculum teaching and research sections (including 1 virtual teaching and research section), 9 provincial experimental teaching centers, 2 provincial university-enterprise joint laboratories, 2 provincial scientific production-education integration practical teaching bases, 12 provincial practical teaching bases for college students, 3 provincial innovative experimental zones for talent cultivation models, and 9 provincial demonstration teacher education practice bases.
Years of teaching practice have enabled a large number of renowned teaching masters and training experts to emerge in the university. They have dedicated themselves silently, blazed new trails, worked assiduously, and carried forward traditions while innovating, laying a solid foundation for talent cultivation. Currently, the university has 653 faculty members, among whom 31% hold a doctoral degree. It boasts a group of experts in the subject review panel of the National Social Science Fund projects, reviewers of the National Key R&D Programs, experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, members of the Physical Education Teaching Steering Committee of National Higher Education Institutions, national and provincial excellent teachers, renowned teaching masters under the "Guangdong Province Special Support Program", specially-appointed professors of the Pearl River Scholar Program, candidates of the "Hundred Talents Program of Outstanding Young and Middle-aged Professional and Technical Talents" of the General Administration of Sport of China, decision-making and consulting experts of the General Administration of Sport of China, and experts on intangible cultural heritage of traditional sports. There are also more than 20 visiting professors and adjunct professors from home and abroad, 27 international umpires & referees, and 45 national umpires & referees. The university has the approval right for first-level umpires granted by the General Administration of Sport of China. Many professors hold important positions in academic organizations at home and abroad and serve as editorial board members of academic journals both domestically and internationally. Since 2004, a total of 20 professors from the university have been appointed as doctoral supervisors by Shanghai University of Sport, South China Normal University or the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the UK, who have guided a total of 85 doctoral students. The Macao Polytechnic University has invited 14 professors from our university as supervisors for master's theses.
GZSU has 5 provincial and ministerial level scientific research platforms, including the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Phyiscal Activity and Health, the Sports Social Science Research Center for Key Research Base for Social Sciences of the State General Administration of Sport, the Key Laboratory of Sports Technology and Tactics Diagnosis and Functional Evaluation of the State General Administration of Sport, and the Guangdong Provincial Engineering Technology Research Center for Sports Assistive Devices, as well as 10 provincial key scientific research platforms for universities and 11 research and innovation teams in universities. There are six provincial and ministerial level science popularization bases, including the national sports science popularization base "Guangzhou Sports College Physical Fitness and Health Promotion Science Popularization Base" and the Guangdong Provincial Social Science Popularization Base, and Guangdong Provincial Children and Youth Sports and Health Promotion Science Popularization Base.
GZSU actively promotes "inter-university cooperation" and "university-local cooperation". It jointly cultivates doctoral students with Shanghai University of Sport, jointly trains postgraduate students with the General Administration of Sport of China, and collaborates with Chinese Badminton Association to establish National Academy of Badminton. GZSU actively explores the mechanism of jointly developing sports through the linkage between the state and localities. Guided by the construction concept of "jointly building by the province and the ministry, receiving support from multiple parties, coordinating and linking up, and sharing responsibilities and benefits", under the leadership of the General Administration of Sport of China and the People's Government of Guangdong Province, it jointly promotes the construction of the National Academy of Badminton.
In the past five years, students from GZSU have won a total of 24 gold medals, 10 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals in international competitions, as well as 198 gold medals, 167 silver medals, and 125 bronze medals in national competitions. At the 11th Guangdong Provincial University Games in 2022, GZSU teams won 61 gold medals, 43 silver medals, and 50 bronze medals, ranking first in terms of the number of gold medals, total medals, and overall team scores in Group B. At the 1st National Student (Youth) Games in 2023, students from GZSU won 11 gold medals, 6 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals, fully demonstrating GZSU leading strength in competitive sports.
In the Paris Olympics, a total of 7 students from Guangzhou Sport University were selected for the Chinese Sports Delegation. They participated in events such as diving, field hockey, wrestling, fencing, 3x3 basketball, and athletics, winning a total of 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal, 1 bronze medal, 1 fifth place and 1 sixth place. These achievements exceeded the number of award-winning athletes and medals of the previous Olympic Games.
GZSU actively serves the national strategies of building a Sports Power and a Healthy China. Relying on key research platforms such as the Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Physical Activity and Health, the Key Research Base of Social Sciences of the General Administration of Sport of China, and the Key Laboratory of the General Administration of Sport of China, it undertakes a number of major and key decision - making consultation projects of the General Administration of Sport of China, and over 30 projects for scientific research tackling and services related to the Olympics. A group of outstanding researchers have been dispatched to more than 10 national teams, including those for women's badminton, field hockey, judo, wrestling, women's hammer throw, women's water polo, fencing, and rifle shooting, to carry out scientific research tackling and services for the Olympics. Due to its outstanding contributions, the university has won the title of "Advanced Collective in Scientific Research for the Olympics".
Based on the national strategy of construction of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It takes initiative to establish Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Guangdong) - ASEAN Sports Alliance, and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Physical Education and Development Alliance, and has successfully held the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Student Sports Festival for three consecutive sessions. Through the "sports bridge", it has built a platform for cultural and people-to-people exchanges among Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao. A group of expert professors from the university have undertaken project topics in areas such as the development of the sports industry inthe Greater Bay Area, the dissemination of traditional sports culture, and youth sports exchanges. Through academic exchanges and cooperation in sports science, they spread information about sports and health as well as Lingnan sports culture, and promote the collaborative and innovative development of regional sports scientific research. The university will actively leverage its own advantages and by constructing the Guang-dong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Sports Culture Exchange Center, creating the Greater Bay Area College Students' Sports Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, and other projects, it will promote the high-quality development of sports education in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
GZSU actively strengthens international exchanges and cooperation, having established partnerships with over 30 universities and research institutions in more than 20 countries and regions including the USA, UK, France, and Canada. For nine consecutive years, GZSU has hosted the Guangzhou Sports & Health International Academic Conference and the "Sports Assistive Devices & Health Promotion" International Academic Conference.
GZSU signed a publishing agreement with De Geuit Publishing House for the journal "Sports Translational Biomedicine": Professor HU Min, the president of GZSU, is invited to serve as the editor-in-chief of the journal. The editorial board of the journal is composed of 35 internationally renowned scientists, clinicians and outstanding young scholars from 15 countries, and through the formation of an international and high-level editorial team, we will work together to create a world-class high-quality journal in the field of sports science.
